In this article we’re going to be discussing our Koala Mattress review. It really doesn’t need an introduction and if you’ve been searching for a boxed mattress for any period of time then the name Koala ultimately comes up in search engines or word of mouth.
Out of all the companies featured on my review website, Koala has clearly spent the most on marketing and advertising their business to the masses. It does help when you name your business after an iconic Aussie animal and use a vibrant blue colour for the base of your mattresses.

Adding to the brand name is the awesome videos of people jumping on the bed with a full glass of red wine not moving an inch in the process. In case you need a visual I managed to track down this video from their Youtube.
They rarely offer any more than a $100 discount which is strange considering their competitors regularly offer $200-$400 coupons to entice customers.
Koala has clearly defined their marketing strategy and opted for quality over quantity and as a consumer you need to fork out a little bit more for that.
But as a consumer is it a case of quality or getting the best mattress at the best price? After all most consumers want to get the same great quality at the rock bottom price and that might be why you’re here?
Koala does claim to be the ‘highest reviewed’ mattress in Australia. Most of the reviews are on their own platform though rather than ProductReviews and other sites.
Koala Mattress Review 2023
Well luckily for you, I purchased a Koala mattress in the queen size. It set me back $1050 (-$100 discount) and was delivered within 6 hours from ordering at 9am.
You can buy and checkout Koala mattresses at most Myer stores. Personally buying online is a far easier process especially if you don’t have a big car like me.
You can opt to pay with Afterpay with repayments as low as $175 per fortnight or Zippay if you can get credit. I personally prefer Afterpay but paid outright with Paypal.
It was unloaded by two delivery men and into the apartment lift within minutes. After unboxing and placing on the bed it was ‘growing in size’ within seconds.
The first impressions were this was a neat piece of kit. I’d only ever bought spring mattresses before which are dull and boring. I quickly jumped on board and while I wasn’t whipping out a bottle of wine (I doubt my warranty would cover this), it felt amazing. If you’ve never experienced a boxed mattress I’m sure you’d feel the same.
After my first nights sleep I woke up feeling refreshed however there was a problem. I was slumped down in the bed and my lower back was aching. Not painful but uncomfortable.
This is something other negative reviewers of the Koala mattress do point out and if you’re a rather heavy male/female/couple you may feel the mattress isn’t firm enough.
Unfortunately the Koala mattress can’t be adjusted to different firmness levels, like you can do with the Ecosa and the Sleeping Duck mattresses. If you’re a firm sleeper then this mattress definitely isn’t for you and if you’re coming from a spring mattress like I was it may take a while to get used to the different style of mattress.
However don’t be put off by the negative reviews, this one of the reasons why Koala give you a huge 120 night trial with a full refund if you’re unhappy at all.
ProductReviews has over 2,000 positive reviews and only a handful of 1,2 or 3 star reviews. Here’s an example review from a very happy koala.
I soldiered through, I’d been told you can expect it to take 2-3 weeks for your back to fully adjust to the new boxed mattress style and Koala were right about that, within a week I was back to my normal self, feeling great but I noticed something very different.
Many months later this returned and I did some research and found the mattress was too soft for me. There are other memory foam mattresses that are less soft, it took me a while to find another company to try before I went with the Emma mattress (read my hands on review).
I was sleeping for a full 7 hours each and every night. I hadn’t experienced this with a spring mattress for many years. No longer did I need 8-9 hours to feel refreshed, 7 was more than enough. As soon as my work alarm went off, I was up right away.
Since I bought the Koala I’ve been going to sleep at nearly midnight-1am each night and waking bright and early at 7.45 each morning. With a spring mattress I was terrified about waking up late.
Why Buy Koala Mattress?
There is a ton of technical jargon on the Koala website and if you’re like me, most of it means very little especially if you’ve never bought a boxed mattress before.
Fortunately I’ve gone on to buy most of the boxed mattresses available to Australians as part of my website so I can share my knowledge with you.
Koala claim their mattress was built for comfort and they’ve engineered Kloudcell which is their version of the foam that sits on the top of the boxed mattress that provides a comfortable, breathable open-cell layer for extra comfort.
They claim to have patented a unique foam that gives the luxurious feel of memory foam and latex combined with breath-ability and bounce to avoid sinking and heat.
If you’re a heavy person then you’re probably going to find the Koala too soft, that was definitely what I first noticed and after comparing other boxed mattresses I stand by this.
The Koala does cover with a removable washable cover to keep it looking smart and feeling fresh, something some other companies don’t provide.
In terms of the layers that make up the foam, Koala is similar to most and offers five zones of differing foam densities to ensure your body is properly aligned from the top to the bottom and everywhere in between.
I can guarantee you will feel comfortable, sometimes too comfortable and you definitely won’t want to get up to do the dishes or go to work!
Koala claims to offer a zero disturbance technology feature which should help you get a better night’s sleep without waking your partner (or getting awoken by them). During my testing, we noticed minimal disturbance and compared with cheaper boxed mattresses, Koala performed well.
Lastly Koala claims to have fresh air down to a tee with their open-cell structure that creates channels within the foam that provides free moving airflow and allows heat to escape. By minimising layers and glue use, they can keep you cool and comfortable no matter what time of year.
Summary
Koala is a great mattress and one of the biggest and most reputable companies offering boxed mattresses in Australia. I thoroughly enjoyed my mattress however the first week caused some discomfort.

How To Buy Koala Mattress
If you’re ready to buy a Koala mattress then you’ve got a few options. The easiest is to buy direct from their website. Cleared payments equals fast delivery.
Koala is one of the only companies to offer payments via both Zippay and Afterpay.
Koala also offer in store viewing at most Myer stores. You can go along and play on the mattress and get a feel for sizes and comfort levels before purchasing.
Myer doesn’t offer the regular discount codes you can expect on Koala website so it makes little sense to buy here however you do get Qantas points from Myer.
How To Buy Koala Online
If you do decide to buy your mattress through the official website make sure you enter the special promo code to get your $100-$150 coupon they regularly run. If it’s nearly end of finance year then you may get an even bigger discount.
You can pay with credit/debit card, Paypal or one of two credit providers.
Your 120 night trial starts from the date your mattress is delivered, not the date you order. Western Australia and rural customers may need to wait 3-5 days for delivery whereas metro customers can expect delivery same day within 4 hours.
Not rural but not metro either? Your mattress is usually delivered within 1-2 days.
How To Setup Koala Mattress
Buying a boxed mattress is straight forward and thankfully setting one up is just as easy:
- Open box next to where you will use mattress
- Open mattress and unravel on base/floor/frame
- Cut open the plastic wrap, don’t nick your mattress!
- The mattress will expand in the next 5-10 minutes
- Allow the mattress to air out for a few hours
- Place a bottom sheet
- Place a mattress topper for added comfort
- Add your pillows, duvet and you’re done.
- Enjoy your Koala mattress.
